EDC KeyChain Part 3: The Multi-Tool

EDC KeyChain Part 3: The Multi-Tool

Today, we are going to discuss selecting a multi-tool for your keychain in our multi part series on the EDC KeyChain. This market has boomed in the last few years, and there are several options available from large companies, down to several smaller, starter companies. Each company has created useful multi-tools for you and I. The question becomes, do you want a dedicated multi-tool, or go with a multi-tool knife like we discussed in our Part 2: The Knife? Let’s discuss some of the more popular, and practical carry keychain dedicated tools. Again, there are so many options in the EDC world, we couldn’t possibly cover them all, this is just to get you started on building your own EDC keychain.

So what are some options that make keychain multi-tools worth carrying? A bottle opener is a great tool to have, and most multi-tools feature one. A flat bladed screwdriver that can double as a small prying surface, a few wrench sizes, and the ability to use 1/4″ driver bits is a huge plus, if you have any handy. There are a lot of options that include most, if not all of these features. So let’s run down a list of good ones to go with.

The Griffin Pocket Tool: The Griffin Pocket Tool packs several features into a small, durable package. The Griffin Pocket Tool comes in 3 sizes, but we suggest you stay away from the XL for EDC Keychain carry. It a quite a large tool! All the models of the Griffin offer a bottle opener, pry/flat blade screwdriver, score edge, ability to use 1/4″ bits, and various wrench sizes depending on the model size you go with.

Swiss+Tech 19 in 1: The Swiss+Tech 19 in 1 is handy, bladeless option for multi-tool that also has pliers. It packs a wide variety of tools like multiple screwdrivers, bottle openers, pliers, wire strippers, and even a hand drill. The pliers clamp down on your keyring for carry, and the handles fold up to lock it in place.

EOS CASES Mini TiShark: The Mini TiShark is a unique design offered by EOS Cases. The tool features a pry bar/screwdriver combo, bottle opener, and 1/4″ bit driver. There is also a slot to hang it, and your keyring, from things like a belt loop.

eos

Gerber Artifact: The Artifact is versatile keychain multi-tool offered by Gerber. While the Artifact does not have 1/4″ bit driver, it does have philips/flat head screwdrivers, pry bar, bottle opener, and a small utility blade. The Artifact blade is a #11 hobby blade, so you won’t do much more than opening boxes with it.

Nite Ize Doohickey: The Doohickey is a great multi-tool option that is also a carabiner for your keyring carry. The Doohickey features 3 wrench sizes, bottle opener, and flat head screwdriver.

There is another option that is absolutely worth mention. Klecker Knives has created a new style of EDC Multi-tool known as their StowAway tools (read our overview HERE). If you purchase their tools with one of their StowAway carabiners, then it becomes a great keychain tool system. Additionally, their Stowaway tools fit conveniently in key organizers like the KeyBar.

Now get out there and add some tools to your EDC. We are men, we should be prepared to handle life’s task! Be on the lookout for our next part in the EDC Keychain series.
